Another season for the mashers who with have consistently punched above their weight in recent season, found themselves in a different situation. A lot of new lads who have picked up the sport in the off season, 6 debutants, joined a larger second team in squad in what promised to be a tough test against relegated Knutsford. Early on it was apparent that the travelling side weren’t the side that only won 3 games last season, a youthful team who looked to ship wide at every chance, this posed a tricky threat to a developing mashers outfit. Early on Knutsford went a couple tries up and it looked to be a long afternoon for the home side, however with returning Mark Thorley taking control of the game, Ashton settled. Thorley going over in the corner looked to reduce the deficit however the visitors were relentless in the first half. Despite the scoreboard, there were plenty of positives to take from the afternoon. The new lads stepped up well, showing real appetite for the contest and no shortage of potential. Special mention goes to Harry McCallum, who worked tirelessly around the park, putting in tackles and carrying with intent. There was also a memorable moment for former coach John Ward, who marked his transition into the playing squad with his first senior try – a reward for his graft and commitment. And it was great to see former junior Connor McPartland back in the fold; he was a menace in the centres all game, and with his power and skill there’s no doubt he’ll be a huge asset this season.Alongside the debutants, the return of familiar faces added some much-needed steel and experience, something that will only benefit the group as the weeks progress. While Knutsford deserved full credit for exploiting our inexperience and playing with width and pace, the signs are there that this Mashers side can grow into a well-rounded unit.A tough day, but one full of learning and promise. With more time together, sharper cohesion, and the spirit already shown, there’s every reason to believe this team will bounce back stronger as the season goes on.
