Ashton 59–26 Eccles
The Mashers travelled to Gorton St full of enthusiasm, boasting a strong squad packed with new faces and plenty of experience. In a great show of sporting spirit, Ashton also kindly assisted Eccles, who were struggling to raise a full side, helping ensure both teams could enjoy a competitive afternoon of rugby.

The lads were also sporting their new kit, kindly supported by Sam Lofthouse and friends, looking as smart as ever for the opening fixture.

From the outset, Ashton looked to dominate possession, with powerful carries from George McCallum and debutant Michael Todd setting the platform for a well-worked backs move, allowing Billy Travis to open the Mashers’ scoring account for the season.

However, what followed was a frustrating 15-minute spell, as two full-length interceptions from Eccles kept the scoreline much closer than the visitors would have liked. A game Ashton would have hoped to put beyond reach in the opening 20 minutes remained very much a contest, with credit due to the home side for capitalising on their opportunities.

At half-time, Ashton held the lead but knew there was plenty of improvement needed to put the game to bed.

Thankfully, a more structured approach, led by experienced heads Alex Maynard, Stephen Carr and Paul Lane, saw the Mashers begin to take real control. Ashton found space out wide, with Luke Turner putting Keir McGinn over for a well-worked try to give the Gambrel Bank outfit some much-needed breathing room.

As Eccles began to tire, the Mashers’ fitness, experience and improved ball retention started to tell. Ashton moved the ball effectively, found gaps in the defence and took control of the remaining proceedings to eventually run out 59–26 winners.

There is plenty to be proud of from the first run-out of the season, with new faces settling in, a strong team performance and nine tries on the scoreboard. However, the lads know there is plenty to work on as they look to build momentum for the weeks ahead.
